A Tribute to my GrandFather
I thought I would share this. I stood up infront of four hundred + people at the funeral to read this. I figured couple more wouldnt hurt.

Pap

Well…. It’s getting late, but there will be no sleep for me. I cannot sleep with all the events that have just occurred. Bobby Barnett, pappy, has died. I find it extremely difficult just to even contemplate this. I cannot picture my grandfather.. Dead… I would try and write something that rhymes like most of my works, but rhyming limits your range of vocabulary, and I am going to need all the words I can muster right now.

The only comfort I find myself dwelling in this situation is knowing that my grandfather is in a better place. It still has not fully hit me that my grand father is gone. That man was my hero. I looked up to him with undying love and respect that will never go away. On February the second, I heard the news that my role model had died….. At first I couldn’t react. I can’t even imagine going to Dickson and not seeing his face or not hearing his usual greeting. He would always have something for us grand children be it gum or mints. He always had some little treat for us to look forward to in his shirt pocket. That smile will always remain in my memory. MY grand father was the kind of guy you lived to love. I remember the first time I went fishing with him. All I had was a little wooden stick attached to string. I couldn’t catch anything, but then pappy took the rod and caught a fish! Shortly after he caught another one! It is amazing how the world seems when you are young. I will never forget the look on his face when I told him I was in ROTC. He seemed so proud of me I could not stop grinning with pride! He was always real proud of his grand children. Josh, Jake, and I seemed nearly invincible in his eyes we thought. All three of us would be lying on the bed waiting for him to come and greet us with his usual “Hello boys!”

Going to Pappy’s house was always an adventure. Not only would gran gran fill us up till we pop on delicious food, Grandpa always told us exciting stories of his. He would also show us all the interesting artifacts he had. Everyone he had told a story. I still have the civil war sword he gave me. I am staring at it right now half expecting for him to tell me the story behind it one last time. It never has got old and it never will.

Sometimes if I listen real close, and the surrounding chaos around me dies down, I can almost hear him speaking to me. I can almost predict what he would say.

“ Hey! My first Grandson! Looky there! I am sorry I don’t have any mints or gum to give you, but I think you will manage this time around. I hear you got your drivers license! How about that! Yessiry! Quite a treat that is son. You be careful on those roads ok? Listen hear boy. Stay strong. You are the first grandson, and an example to your younger ones. You’ve grown up so fast! Sooner or later you will be hitting the ceiling! A spitten image of your daddy! I am better in this place now son. I know it’s hard to accept that, but it was time for me to go. We never did make that Tomahawk did we?
We were certainly getting around to it I tell you what! You still got that old sword? Don’t loose track of that, it will be worth some money some day! You make sure you get a good college education because that is where the money is at! Guide you and your cousins as you get older. Try to get along with your sister. I know you two fight all the time. Well boy! I got to get going. I will be watching yawl so don’t think I cant see you! Good bye, Johnathon.”

Well I will try to keep all the good times in check, though it is difficult to smile this day. I will try. You all should too. After all that is what he would want. He is watching us now. It would not surprise me if he was in this room listening to me read this. Rest in peace pap. I will miss you.

Re: A Tribute to my GrandFather
Sorry Exanderous, we are all extremely limited and prone to bear this some day. I've been through one, long ago.

You can always keep your grandfather's presence with you. But it is up to you now, among others, if he will continue to have an influence upon our world.

I suppose that is one way to at least smile about it- To know that someone will never truly "die" until everything they have done and encompassed, has disappeared. Don't let that happen. :)

I have felt the feeling of death's presence as the took my beloved pets away. The only thing worse is having a blood relative die. I can only imagine that sort of pain. I just have to admire your strength dealing with such tragic happenings.

I thank you my friend. My family is dropping like flies recently. so this indeed was a serious spirit breaker. But hey! If your still alive, cant complain.. Things could get much worse.
