Scales can be pierced, and so a dragon might prefer to have some greater protection in the case of a battle.

dragons scales harden with age. so the older they are the better the fight for them, but young dragons like me would porab;y resort to the strike and go and hope your apponent can't follow.

Ah, but there is more than one species of dragon with thicker or thinner scales etc., and as such many of them might want armor, even for a hit-and-run.
