I did one charcoal when I smeared it and it resembled a creepy fog. Of course, charcoal IS eraseable, but it looked super cool!

I try to avoid smudges with some of my better drawings, but smudging does turn out being a useful technique in ageing a peice and giving off unique effects, or making writing look cool. It depends on how smudging is used really

I use it to help blend the shading, so it looks more natural, then I go back over some of the lines to make them bolder
