Happy Birthday
Cathay sat at the stool, looking at the book Miss Telthera had given to her with the help of Amoric. The twins were one day away from turning 15. For Amoric, it was one year away from joining the Dragon Seekers. For Cathay, she was one year away from marriage.
Cathay sighed and turned the page. She didn’t want to get married. Soren hadn’t yet. But he’s a boy, not a girl. Girls didn’t make the decisions, she thought as she stared at a mountain dragon illustration. And to make things worse, one of Amoric’s friends had started talking to her.
Nirithe was a sixteen-year-old teenager with black hair and green eyes, like Myrtle’s. Myrtle was already fifteen, and she was very pretty. Camille had also turned fifteen, only a few days ago. Only yesterday she had told Cathay, “I don’t want to be engaged or whatever. I’m just content to remain free and happy.” Cathay and Myrtle agreed.
Nirithe wasn’t part of the Dragon Seekers, unlike Soren, who was now at the age of nineteen. He was still a scout, but a good one, too. That was why the leader of the band decided to keep him as a scout. Soren was satisfied. “Besides,” he confided to them later, “I like scouting.”
Cathay shook her head and returned to her book. Her thought began to wander again, and she thought about Nirithe. She had heard rumors, rumors that Amoric, Myrtle, and Camille didn’t like. Dark rumors, that his older brother had killed a newborn dragon, a hatchling, and then later sold the skeleton for money to a peddler. Rumors that a dragon killed his parents as they attempted to steal its eggs. Rumors, even darker, that a rebel band was growing right under the village’s nose.
“Cathay!” This brought her back from her senses, and she turned to find Myrtle and Camille at the kitchen window. “Hold on! I’ll be out in a second!” She pounded upstairs and knocked on Soren’s bedroom door.
“What?” Soren called out, opening the door. His room was plain and simple with a table, bed, and a small wooden trunk where his clothes were. A single, large, glass window illuminated the room. “Well, what is it?” “Myrtle and Camille are asking me to go with them. I’ll be back before dinner,” she added, seeing the look on his face. “Oh, all right,” he grinned. “Just make sure you come back, okay?” “Okay! I promise! Tell Uncle and Amoric that I went with them, so they won’t be worried,” she added as she flew down the steps. “Have fun!” Soren called as she went to her room downstairs. It was also like Soren’s; except hers was downstairs and it had a tiny bookcase.
She opened the lid of her trunk and took out a small satchel that could be slung on her back. She also took her leather drawing book, her ink, her feather pen, and her dragon book. After stuffing them inside the blue satchel, she grabbed it and ran towards the kitchen.
“Just a second!” She took a loaf of bread and wrapped it cloth. It, too, joined the articles in the satchel. She opened the door, and joined her friends outside.
Myrtle looked at her. “Well! I thought you’d said you’d only take a second,” she said, admiring the dress Cathay was wearing. “By the way, I like your dress. It’s very pretty. Cathay was wearing a black dress with silver trimming. The sleeves came up to her elbows, and the skirt was ankle length. She wore a blue-gray vest and an apron.
“Oh, thank you! Telthera gave it to me for an early birthday present. So, why did you want me?” Camille and Myrtle exchanged looks. “Well, we can’t tell you here, it’s not that safe. We have to go somewhere,” Camille said uneasily. Cathay threw her a puzzled glance. “You mean, where we usually go?” Myrtle nodded. “But we have to make sure no one is following.”
The three girls walked along the dirt road, heading away from the village. People passed by and some recognized them. “Well, hello girls!” An old man leading a mule smiled and waved to them. “Hello Mr. Garth!” they smiled and waved back. “Out picking berries again, girls?” he chuckled to himself. “Well, bring some back fer Daisy, will you?” “We will. We always do,” Myrtle said, pulling Cathay and Camille with her. “Just don’t get picked off by a dragon. There are rumors that a lair is pretty close by our village.” Rumors. More rumors again, Cathay thought as the she waved goodbye. @Copyright Jade Dragon
