They were said to live in the city of Heliopolis (City of the Sun). Firebirds, on the other hand, were birds of Russian legend and folklore; they appeared as gem-encrusted and made from gold. They sang beautiful songs and their tears could heal even fatal injuries.

of course, firebirds are much more rare than phoenixes and they're not actually made of gold or gem encrusted. they just have very bright and colorful plumage. firebirds are about the size of a heron and phoenixes are about the size of a goshawk.
