It's taken a lot of time. You can still look up my oldest pieces on this site and see the development over the course of about seven years. I only started Photoshop in the last 5 years. It's taken a lot of redundant practice and yet I still don't do backgrounds and I've barely gotten comfortable with drawing people and other creatures

heheh, i've seen some of your old stuff, and i see there is an immense increase of ability; and i understand your difficulty with people and other creatures...the best i have done is my profile pic on DA.

well, art is a learnable skill. The only thing neccesary is the will to devoutly practice it. That involves a lot of comparitive work and observation as well as sketching. I once sketched my own hand while it was in the position of sketching said sketch. It was an interesting experiance. I was bored and had a charcoal stick...

i am in art so im sure to grow in some areas. i might even post my Elvis portrait that i had to do for art. on DA of course

I wouldn't mind trying something like that out but Ive already got too much on my plate. I still have a book and a half to read ASAP, though this second one isn't annoying like the one I read last week, other school assignments, and a small list of drawings already pending including a dragon portait of my roommate and sketches for my story. This is about as relaxed as college gets and my workload, both educational and personal, still seems infinite. Aside, if you're not good at something, I'd see that as simply one good reason to draw it.

well reading is fun, the art seems...ah my coco is good... interesting and would be nice to view, the school work is discouraging..to a degree, but is necessary...i'm not too open for art work at the moment either, and i have some physics and assorted work and projects that are necessary for completion coming up.

The book I'm reading now is fun. The one I was reading before irritates me more than I can sufficiently complain about...A preist exorcises a whole planet because the inhabitants are perfectly moral lizard people that don't believe in God and therefore must be an illusion of the Devil....and then it has an ending that is supposed to be ambiguous but isn't and just falls flat, failing to get it's point across even if that point is that a planet should be blown up through exorcism. The focus of the book is a mess too....That aside the book I'm now reading is much better. More interesting characters and a thematic voice that actually seems to matter and have purpose. Physics....eh. Mathy science XP What kind of competition?

competition...how'ed you know? i didn't say anything about a competition but there is one, in physics. i have to build a rocket. that first book you read seems a little exorcist...just a bit and...but you know what a good series of dragon books are? the dragon keeper series, its really cool.

You used the word completion and I assumed it was a typo for 'competition' based on context clues. I'm sorry if I jump to conclusions weirdly. Looking over the statement again it makes more sense as 'completion' than it did before. Rocket making sounds like a lot of fun. I've never heard of that series. I'm perhaps not as well read as a writer should be.

well, my reading scores and tests are off the charts for my grade level...for the most part. (excluding this year of English...the teacher is a horrible AP teacher and doesn't know how to teach, only how to over load students.)

@Leatherys: Yay for de-lurking! Physics just confuses me. The book I'm reading now says that when traveling near light speed time for you, as a passenger, seems to slow down if I'm reading this correctly, so that in a seventeen year journey to Alpha Centauri you would, personally, experiance only about a year of time. It doesn't make sense to me at all @Klepter: That's a shame about the teacher, English is the most important subject for students in America to learn, especially writers. It should never be taught improperly. Really sweet grades though, mine are only moderately high.

Well...I'm afraid that this year is gonna mess em up. but, it happens...now about this traveling at light speed...time is relative, is it not? So if it's measured from an individual standpoint you can only guess to by which degree your either above or below the norm, right? (that's all I'm gonna contribute since it wasn't directed to me anyway...and I'm not studied in that area...ignore my statement!! Lol)

I used to be really into theoretical physics and whatnot, so that bit about light speed sounds about right. After my first semester or so of mechanical physics dissuaded me from pursuing a career in that field...there's way too much calculus involved for my personal taste, but I still maintain a moderate interest in the subject. As for English: I have come to hate it with every fiber of my being. I am an avid reader and (occasional) writer, but all of my English teachers - ever since 6th grade - have been utterly awful (with the exception of one; and I'm still trying to decide if I like my current Composition teacher or not). I never had the stomach for Honors English classes; my essay-writing skills are practically nil. My aptitude tests tend to be high, but my actual grades...not so much.

Heh laetherys, I hate most of my teachers too, but those are the ones you'll remember. Kinda makes you want to be better then them in the future.

Oh yeah. I find it hard to see myself being a teacher...putting up with immature kids...torturing them with an essay per week. And I don't hate most of them - just the select few. Some teachers (the ones who are good at teaching) I like and actually respect. I hardly even notice my other mediocre teachers.

Most of my really bad (or just crazy) teachers have been in math for me, which is probably part of the reason I can't fully grasp relativity. I had one in particular who just seemed like she was gearing up to make everyone fail. She graded based on how you did the work down to the last obsessive compulsive detail so even if you got the right answer, if you did any step differently it was half off. I retook every single test, understood everything just fine, and despite all of my hard work only got a C when I was able to get competent grades in other math classes just fine if I tried. The last two teachers I've had were ok, my Calculus professor not bad but just generally above my head.

Teachers can be a little over the top tho. I mean, there here to help but some don't know when they get to the point of hindering, like your math teachers Kel, if they just spew bits of maths to everyone and give not contex in which to solve anything, what good are they? And the grading isn't all bad...cept for if you miss anything it's instantly half wrong...

Ew. That does sound awful. I can't say that I've ever had a really, really bad math teacher. They all seem...meh to me. I was a year ahead from everyone else in my grade for a while, but I never really tried very hard and I always got bad grades. At least, that was how it was until I took trig, which I actually liked. I dropped down from the honors track for calculus, and did rather well (although I was bored most of the time). For me, I find that if I really like a subject, I will do well. If I don't, then my grades tend to suffer.

No, you don't understand. This was not a course in how to properly do calculations in one single way, it was a course on how to do math. And it wasn't, do this right and get an A, it was do this exactly as Mrs.Shaw would do it and hopefully get an A. I once got half of in an inequality problem. I was unsure whether to switch the sign before or after dividing. I decided to switch it after dividing so the equation would look honest. Aparently, I was supposed to switch it before dividing....I'm assuming as a function of the process of dividing? It's highschool, not master level. It shouldn't make a difference where you switch a tiny little sign as long as you know why it ends up switching and switch it. She did other things too, most of which I can't remember, and she was generally what you can consider a crazy teacher. That one problem sticks with me though because of how silly and OCD you have to be to seriously mark off a grade over something so minuscule. It's like being taught by a finicky, un-userfriendly computer program. One zero off and your input is void. @Leatherys: I think that's generally true for most people. I failed Calculus, and although I did have a lot of grnuine trouble with it and some real problems keeping up, I think I was overall hindered by the sheer volume of hate I feel for the subject. I sometimes wouldn't do homework out of spite and frustration.

Heh...trig is easy...now anyway, and I'm hoping calculus isn't that bad when I get there in a year. (I take all AP classes no matter what, even if I don't get high grades...the "perks" of being in an engineering academy ((with a robotics team)))

@Kelsey: It's usually the understanding of the subject that I bother with; I don't care much for grades. As long as you understood the subject Mrs. Shaw was teaching, you shouldn't worry too much about the nitpicks of her grading. That does sound rather overbearing.
@Klepter: Calculus isn't too bad, and it's important to understand, me thinks (especially when you're interested in the sciences). Physics is rubbish without calculus. On another matter, I see the word "engineering". That word scares me.

Trig was easy in Geometry. All I had to do was remember SOHCAHTOA and I was fine. I quite liked Geometry actually. When I got into Calc and found out that trig no longer applied to triangles but wave functions...eh....I wish I had taken an actual Trig class in highschool, but I was doing my best at the time to avoid as many math classes as possible, especially after Mrs.Shaw's class.

Heheh it's professionally called Tulsa engineering academy at memorial...affeciontely know as T.E.A.M and it's kinda perstigouse in the fact that almost everyone who goes through it has a very firm foundation with the maths and siences so that almost every career is now open for development. @Kel: A lot if math isn't the best thing, especially if it's all in one year...edit: this is the lobgest conversation I've had in a month. My senior year of highschool I only had one math class, which was basically a retake of Algebra 2. I did well in it, got a B while being lazy. I wasn't overburdened. Last semester I was overburdened with Calculus because it wasn't a beginner class and the pace was beyond me and I hadn't taken math of any kind in well over a year. It's a shame for people like me that math is such a prevalent and neccesary subject to master because it is needed in almost every career on some level. Calculus itself I think would be easy if I were to get more acustomed to it. The way they describe it, the theorems and so on all sound very simple, but when doing them everything becomes kind of hazy. It's frustrating. I'm moving my major to Literature so hopefully I won't have this problem further, but I'm considering a veterinary degree in the future and that will definately require math. eh. Anyway, I should get offline. I'm making less headway in my book than I should. You are all very distracting dragons! Goodnight all.

Even now I was only glancing before finally going to bed....the book I'm reading is still not done...Even when busy, I have an absurd habit of glancing over DA, Facebook, and here just to see if anything non-school related is going on, even if I know there isn't. Actually my new favorite term is bird watcher, but bird watchers don't interact with their birds so ghost has become more appropriate. I have thirty pages left in my book now. Hopefully I'll be able to interact more at times that still have "PM" in their title rather than pushing my sleeping habits to new extremes

well, to the credit of lurkers, at least the term suggests being alive whereas the term ghost implies 'having died in a traumatic and unfulfilling way.' So there's that! Oh, and something interesting I learned about my school's county: You cannot board the bus if you're barefoot, but if you're wearing nothing but socks on your feet then that's fine. I'm going to bed covered in dried paint. It's been forever since I've actually been more or less covered in paint. I wonder what my karate friends will think when they see what my white shirt has turned into

Painting, with acrylic, and that is very messy even with the most sincere of care. I'm doing my character, Laura's, eye. Eyes are a good test of where my skill level is at and for some reason having three on-going art projects during a time I should be focusing on college isn't enough

ive used acrylic...it wasnt so bad. i was basiclly splashing it too.

Acrylic is a funky medium. It's harder to control than oil pastel or colored pencil. It's more forgiving though, once you're used to it, and it allows you the greatest range of shades, colors and textures out of all other flat media. It also dries faster than oil paint so it's easier to work with and if you use a paint medium or thinner or even water you can gain more control over both flow and opacity. It requires a lot more practice than other mediums and it's harder to get a hold of (pricy), but once you're used to it you have a lot of versatility....and mess

I have the exact opposite opinion actually. I have a smock specifically for painting in because I'm such a mess with acrylic. I have a bad tendancy to fingerpaint or, as I once did when I ran out of palette space, mix paint against my own skin. I will also pay little attention to my sleeves which will get stuck in paint and get paint everywhere....which I admit is a genuine problem but that aside I'm usually proud to be covered in any media. I spent much of my highschool life covered in graphite, pen, ink, charcoal, tempura, acrylic, glue, plaster, and even marker once. I've worked in just about every common medium at least once. It's always funny seeing how people react when I walk in covered in something, even though they mostly just think I'm rather crazy and perhaps dirty. I consider it a major downfall of Photoshop/digital paint: the lack of mess and hands-on work.

when I am drawing with pencil I always seem to get pencil smudges right on the tip of my nose EVERYTIME lol I love how the eyes just pop in this and the aqua blue is very pretty )
